Introducing The BankLink Service for Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSFs)

“The BankLink Service provides SMSF trustees with solutions to simplify the accounting process – letting trustees spend less time on accounting compliance and more time with their family.”

BankLink_logo_small

To effectively meet the strict compliance requirements for our Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) clients, Prouse Family Accountants has recently implemented The BankLink Service. This will enable us to work more efficiently and accurately with our SMSF clients.

How does it work?

BankLink securely collects electronic copies of your statement information from your bank or financial institution and then delivers this directly to Prouse Family Accountants.

Using BankLink, we can process your transactions and, where additional information is required, request additional information from you.

BankLink benefits for SMSF trustees:

  • Saves time and hassle – you no longer have to send in paper statements .
  • Accurate transactional data for audit purposes
  • Less chance of documentation getting lost or misplaced – by receiving regular transaction information from BankLink, on a monthly basis, we will be able to communicate with you more regularly and collect the paperwork we require.

Is it secure?

The BankLink Service is a totally separate system from internet banking and it does not allow any transactional capabilities on your accounts. You will continue to receive paper bank statements and our practice will simply receive an additional copy.

Your statement information is totally secure, as The BankLink Service complies with the stringent international security requirements of all the major banks and financial institutions.

How to get started

Call the office on 9246 9055 or email: olive@prouse.com.au and we will email you an information pack and a registration form to complete and send to your bank authorising us to receive an electronic copy of your bank statement.

Typically, you will need to allow 2-3 weeks for the BankLink service to be enabled on your business bank accounts.

Office Closed: 16 December to 9 January

We’re closing the office from Friday 16 December until Monday 9 January

Prouse Family Accountants has already lodged more than 5000 income tax returns this financial year. Just like previous years, we are closing the office for a couple of weeks to relax, rewind and recharge with family and friends.

Whilst the office is closed we will not be accessing our email or returning phone calls. We will return at 9AM on Monday 9 January 2011.

If we are waiting on information from you to finalise your return then we aim to complete it in January.
Thank you for your referrals

We appreciate our clients and we look forward to working with you again in the coming year. The greatest compliment you can give us is when you refer your friends, family and small business colleagues.

Prouse Family Accountants would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and we hope you make a safe and successful start to 2012!

It’s June. The month to watch for dodgy tax schemes

lemon The ATO has launched a new awareness campaign to help taxpayers protect themselves against promoters marketing dodgy tax and investment schemes.

From the ATO press release:

Don’t let yourself get a lemon

Are you considering a tax-effective investment?

It’s important you have all the facts to make an informed decision.

Some investments offer tax benefits such as reducing assessable income or increasing deductions, but end up being outside the law. You can check with the ATO to ensure promised tax benefits will be available.

Find out as much as you can about an arrangement before investing. Make sure the arrangement has a prospectus or product disclosure statement and get independent advice about the promised tax benefits from a professional advisor. A person associated with the scheme is not independent.

Start by visiting www.ato.gov.au/investing and read the Investigate before investing fact sheet. It provides information about tax effective investing and how to detect potential tax avoidance schemes.

You can also check if the arrangement you’re considering is covered by an ATO product ruling confirming the tax benefits, or if a Taxpayer alert has been issued warning about the arrangement.

Doing your research will help you avoid negative consequences including having to repay tax and incurring interest and penalties.

More delays and explanations from the ATO

More delays and explanations from the Australian Tax Office.More than 300 000 taxpayers who have already lodged their 2008/9 tax return are still waiting for the ATO to issue their notice of assessment and pay their tax refunds.

This situation is affecting many of our clients who have lodged after 1 January 2010.

Since the the Tax Office installed a new multimillion-dollar computer system to process claims in January, there is a growing list of delays, glitches, errors and problems.

Recent media coverage about the problem:

What can we do if you are affected?

If you have lodged your tax return after early January 2010 and have not received your notice of assessment then you may be affected. The ATO will pay interest on all tax refunds that are more than 30 days late if their system is responsible for the delay.

We continue to contact the ATO on behalf of our clients on a regular basis – and through our professional body, the NTAA – provide feedback to the ATO.

These glitches are creating hardships and cashflow problems for some of our clients. Unfortunately, there is very little we can do except process refunds and send out assessment notices as soon as we have received them.

If clients wish to contact the ATO directly, they may do so on 13 28 61 or visit this ATO website for more information.

For more information, please contact us on 08 9246 9055 or send an email to: marmion@prouse.com.au

ATO experiencing delays processing income tax refunds

Giant traffic jam The Tax Office has recently upgraded their computer system and there are significant delays processing income tax returns.

If you lodged your return after 4 January 2010 then we have not received your assessment notice – or tax refund – yet!

The ATO have started processing income tax returns again and they hope to have cleared backlog of tax assessment notices – and tax refunds – before the end of the month.
